The name Lochinvar is Scots Gaelic, Loch an barr, and means "Loch on the hilltop". Consequently it is stressed on the last syllable (unlike Lochinver). The place gave the name to a number of aristocratic titles including the Baron of Lochinvar, the Laird of Lochinvar, and most notably to "young Lochinvar" in Walter Scott's epic poem Marmion.
