Campbellfield is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 16 km north from Melbourne's central business district. Its Local Government Area is the City of Hume. At the 2006 Census, Campbellfield had a population of 5,401.

History

The first Campbellfield Post Office was open briefly in 1854. It reopened on June 1, 1856 and closed in 1893, replaced by the Campbellfield Railway Station office. This, in turn, was renamed Campbellfield around 1903. [3] Campbellfield is home to Victoria's oldest church. The Scots church was built on Sydney Road in 1842, and replaced by the present blue stone structure in 1855. It was placed on the National Estate and Victorian Heritage Register, and has been an icon of Victorian history.

Today

Campbellfield is currently home to the Ford Australia factory on Sydney Road. Built in 1959, it is where the current Falcon and Territory is manufactured. Recent years have seen a number of jobs cut at the plant, including 350 jobs in August 2008,[4] and a further 450 jobs in October 2008.[5] Campbellfield is also an industrial and business suburb, with the Somerton Park Industrial Estate and National Business Park situated at the northern end of the suburb. There is also another business hub being built on Cooper Street, at the north - east end of Campbellfield. Campbellfield has only one primary school. Campbellfield Heights Primary School is located at Waratah and Mason Street's, in the Somerset Estate. There is currently no secondary college in the suburb. Shopping and Commerce wise, the suburb has the small Campbellfield Plaza, which has a K Mart discount store, a Coles supermarket and an Officeworks. There is also the large Pipeworks Fun Market on Mahoneys Road, and take-away restaurants McDonald's, Red Rooster and Hungry Jack's situated along Sydney Road. Continued development has seen the site of Chris and Marie's Plant Farm and a recent Mitre 10 Superstore opening on the western side of Sydney Road. The Mitre 10 closed in March 2009 due to the building having structural problems. [6]It is also home to Olympic Fitness Equipment located in the business hub. A new homemaker center is proposed for Campbellfield, on Sydney Road opposite Somerset Road. It will contain several furniture, electrical and retail outlets to service the growing residential and wider community. It is expected to open in mid-2009.

Transport

Bus routes 530 , 531 , 532 , 538 , 540 and 560 travel though or terminate in Campbellfield and extend to surrounding suburbs. Railway stations that are nearest to Campbellfield are Upfield station on the Upfield line, located in nearby Upfield, and Broadmeadows station, on the Craigieburn line. Campbellfield once had a railway station, however it closed in 1956 for the newly formed Upfield Station, which was located in a position more accessible to the community.
