Description

Moorsel is a village in East Flanders, Belgium, a deelgemeente of the city of Aalst. The village belongs to a league of neighboring villages, which call themselves the Faluintjesgemeenten. Moorsel is the largest of the four villages with approximately 4,600 inhabitants.

History

Moorsel has existed from the early Middle Ages. Approximately one-third of the village was dedicated to "Moorsel proper" - the property of the local nobility, which included a strengthening moat from the 8th century, still visible. The land's title was elevated to that of a barony in 1661.[1] The rest of the town (Morsel-kapittel) dates as far back as 868, and was historically the property of Dendermonde. One of the largest landowners in the region was Affligem Abbey: one of the abbots, Karl de Croij, Bishop of Tournai, had a water castle built in the area in 1546, which still stands.[1] Only after the French Revolution was Moorsel's administrative classification altered and the two villages (i.e., Moorsel proper and Moorsel-kapittel) united. The Revolution also marked the end of Affligem's influence in the village.[1]

Landmarks

Moorsel is home to a chapel dedicated to Saint Gudula, a reminder of the village's significance in the legend of the saint: it is held that Gudula frequently visited the church in Moorsel, which was about two miles from her home. The 14th century structure was built with sandstone from Meldert, one of the Faluintjesgemeenten. Also notable is St. Martin's Church (Sint-Martinuskerk), whose Romanesque substructure dates from the 12th century, which tradition says are the remains of a 7th century communion chapel dedicated to Saint Gudula. The current church contains three Baroque altars by Jacob Ulner.[2] Another attraction is the Renaissance-era waterkasteel, which, except for minor renovations, has remained preserved in its original state.[1] The château is constructed entirely in red brick, and was intended as a summer residence for the Abbot Karl de Croij, later a Cardinal of Tournai.[2]

Name

Today's accepted spelling "Moorsel" dates merely from the 18th century. Other spellings, such as Morcella, are older, dating back to 1114. The name itself is a combination of moor, "marsh", and sele or sall, "dwelling": a moor dwelling.[1]
