Rencontre East is a small, isolated fishing community located north east of Belleoram, and west of Grand La Pierre on Fortune Bay. The population was 131 in February 2009. The main industry is cod and lobster fishing. Rencontre East is the location of one of only a few Molybdenum mines in Canada's history. The mine was located at Ackley City at Rencontre Lake just minutes north of the town. The town has two grocery stores, a fire hall, an all grade school and a community hall. There are two churches, one Anglican (St. Stephens) and one Catholic (St. Josephs). Most recently the town has seen a big decline in population due to work shortage resulting in many residents leaving for bigger centres all across Canada.
