Historical population
Vanxains is one of the few communes in France where the population did not change between the 1990 and the 1999 censuses.
Modern community
From 1982 to 1999, a very small amount of events or tourists arrived. Because of this fact, since 2004 the citizens have held a weekly market, that provides all entitys of everyday life for them. Within the town there is a one-hundred year old church with a steeple, which according to folklore harbours the "Vanxains Devil". Any citizen or tourist within eight-hundred feet of the church are prohibited from editing certain features of their house (e.g. windows, doors, walls), as a result of this it has been nicknamed "protection Zone". Seven tourists have arrived in the town in the past three years, all within the "Protection Zone" and have attempted to customize their home, one Sheridan family tried to change their shutters to plastic, but the Mayor denied permission. The same family tried to change their windows to PVC (Double-glazed). They have conveyed their frustration thoroughly. The two children of the family remain as the only children in the town that do not attend the primary school, which is incidentally, directly across the road from their dwelling.

The Vanxains Devil is a folkloric legend that is supposedly sitting atop the steeple of the old church. Sightings a have been reported, but are theorized just to be practical jokes.
