It lies on the Neckar, 10 km upriver from Heidelberg. As of 2006, there were 14,122 inhabitants. It was founded in the 10th century and became a free town in 1286. In 1395 it passed to the elector palatine and, together with the surrounding district, became part of Baden in 1814. The town still keeps its medieval charm.
