Although it is rather small, a variety of German celebrities lives or formerly lived in Tutzing including the president of the Federal Constitutional Court Hans-Jürgen Papier, musicians Peter Maffay and Leslie Mándoki and Munich rake Simon Gogl. Tutzing is the place where Erich Ludendorff died in 1937.

Elly Ney honorary citizenship debate

One recently much-debated honorary citizen of Tutzing is the late Elly Ney, a pianist and active national socialist and Hitler-devotee. Ney wrote ardent letters to Hitler ("my Fuehrer") and frequently espoused anti-semitic nazi ideology. In the fall of 2008, Tutzing's current mayor, Dr. Wanner, executing his rights as landlord of the town hall, took down a portrait of Ms. Ney that hung there and thus unleashed an ongoing debate about the "causa Ney", the question as to whether Tutzing should strip Elly Ney of her honorary citizenship. Countless German press articles, several academics, the president of the German Jewish Federation, and many engaged citizens of Tutzing, voiced strong concerns, calling Ney's ongoing honorary status and the debate itself shameful and embarrassing. Despite the strong support of all these voices for a motion to remove Elly Ney's honorary citizenship and to rename the street carrying her name, in late January 2009, Tutzing's ultra-conservative community council decided to maintain the status quo.

Holocaust history and memorial

Tutzing was one stop on the route of the legendary "trail of tears" of concentration camp inmates walking south from Dachau in 1945. A commemorative plaque in front of the town hall commemorates their fate and the many people who died along the way.
