Adenau bears the nickname "Johanniterstadt" because the Order of Saint John established here in the Middle Ages. The city's coat of arms represents a lion houses and a cross. The northern loop of the Nürburgring lies in Adenau. The District Breidscheid was until 1952 a separate municipality. The lords of Breidscheid were already in the 13th Century. The chapel of Breidscheid is dedicated to Saint Roch and Sebastian and was built in 1630 as pest chapel.

History

Adenau was mentioned 992 for the first time under the name "Adenova". Ulrich, count of Are donated his mansion 1162 to the Saint John Order (also called Order of Malta).So was Adenau the third oldest settlement of this order in Germany. The members of the order cared for paupers and pilgrims. In 1816 Adenau became the seat of an independent district. The District Adenau was one of the poorest districts in Prussia. In 1927, on the initiative of Dr. Creutz, the Nurburgring opened. 1932 the district Adenau was dissolved and merged with the district Ahrweiler.

In Adenau, there are three schools: a primary, a secondary and a high school (Gymnasium). The Erich Klausener Gymnasium[1] has 723 pupils and 46 teachers. The secondary school has 486 pupils. (Realschule)[2] (Hauptschule)[3] The primary school has 240 pupils and 21 teachers.

The Hohe Acht

The Hohe Acht is a tertiary volcano, whose cones are made of Devonian rock and the hill of basalt - it is 747 m above sea level. It's the highest peak of the Eifel. The Kaiser-Wilhelm-tower stands on the 'Hohe Acht' since 1909: The tower was built from 1908 to 1909 on the occasion of the silver wedding of Emperor Wilhelm II and Empress Augusta Victoria. The 16.3 m high tower was designed by architect Freiherr von Tettau and became the status of a protected monument in 1987. The Tower offers a magnificent view of the Eifel landscape.[4]
