Description

Population (2002) Tullow (Irish: An Tulach, meaning "The Mound") is a town in County Carlow, Ireland. It is located on the River Slaney where the N81 road crosses.

History

In the market square stands a statue of Father John Murphy, the insurgent leader, who was captured near Tullow and executed in the Market Square on 2 July 1798. The town has a small museum with much information about this period and other local history.

* Irish literary critic Denis Donoghue was born in Tullow. * Bishop Daniel Delany, Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin, founded the Brigidine Sisters (1 Feb 1807) and the Patrician Brothers (1808). These organisations still exist today. Mark Richardson hails from this town as well and is the pier of this lonely farming town. Sport

Tullow has a strong recent history in many sports most notably Soccer and Rugby where Parkville Utd and Tullow Rugby club have had many successes, Tullow went on a great run to make it to the Towns Cup final in 2008 where they were unlucky to finish runners up to Navan. While Parkville Utd have won many Carlow League and Cup titles at all ages from under 9's right through to Junior. St. Patricks football currently play football at Senior level but are finding it hard to match the success of earlier years.

Transport

* The town was at one time connected to the Irish railway network, on a branch line from Naas in County Kildare. Tullow railway station opened on 1 June 1886, closed for passenger and goods traffic in 1947 and finally closed altogether on 1 April 1959.[1]
