Crosshaven (Bun an Tabhairne in Irish) is a village in County Cork, Ireland. The village located in a scenic area with views of Currabinny Wood, and Cork Harbour.

Economy

Originally a fishing village, the maritime sector is still important. In the 20th century tourism became important to the town, which has 5 beaches within a 2-mile radius. Other Attractions included Piper's funfair (known as "the merries"), the local nightclub, The Majorca, and the cinema, the cockleshell, which is now an arcade called La Scala. Today Crosshaven is becoming a commuter town for Cork City.

Environmental Concerns

In the 70s and 80s environmental concerns came to the fore as a large industrial estate was built across the river in Ringaskiddy which hosts Pfizer and Smithkline Beecham among others. Although not upwind of this estate, the air quality was often appalling in these years. There was also an attempt to dump asbestos waste in the area which was cancelled due to fierce local opposition. Much of the area's local scenery was destroyed forever when land owned by the local squire fell into the hands of American property speculators dovey international. It has since become a housing estate, much of which remains unoccupied.

The club currently 2 pitches, an all weather training area and four dressing room clubhouse (plans submitted recently to Cork County Council will see a major redevelopment of the existing clubhouse). * Crosshaven RFC (Rugby Union Football Club) was founded on October 1st, 1972 and has three pitches, floodlights, parking, showers, changing rooms and a gym located at Myrtleville Cross in Crosshaven.. * Crosshaven also has a GAA club playing both hurling and gaelic football * In the 80's, largely thanks to the efforts of Jim Enright, the local basketball team persuaded a number of US nationals to play for the team, and for a number of years the local team competed in the 2nd division of the national league.

* Cork Airport is the nearest airport. * Crosshaven railway station was the southern terminus of the Cork, Blackrock and Passage Railway (which originally opened in 1850, but only extended south of Passage West at the start of the 20th century). The station opened on 1 June 1904, but finally closed on 1 June 1932.[1] * A bus service to/from Cork city operated by Bus Éireann serves Crosshaven 15 times per day.
