Population (2006) Oranmore (Irish: Órán Mór) is a suburban village in County Galway on the outskirts of Galway city in Ireland. With its major housing developments, Oranmore is rapidly becoming a part of Galway's commuter or suburban belt. In 2004 Oranmore was listed as one of the communities with the highest per capita incomes in Ireland[citation needed]. Oranmore is situated 11 km (7 miles) East of Galway City on the edge of Oranmore Bay, an inlet of Galway Bay.
Economy
The focus of local industry has recently shifted from primarily dairy agriculture to tourism, manufacturing and logistics, and there are several industrial parks located near the village, such as Deerpark Industrial Estate. Oranmore now has four hotels and several restaurants. As Oranmore grows it is becoming more attractive to retailers. Lidl is set to open on the site of the old Oranmore Dairies and a Tesco store will be built on the green area to the west of the village near Oranmore Castle.

* Oranmore railway station opened on 1 August 1851 and finally closed on 17 June 1963.[2].The station is due to reopen in 2009 as part of the Transport 21 scheme * Bus Éireann, Citylink and Nestor Bus services through Oranmore serve Galway, Dublin, Cork and Dublin and Shannon Airports. * Oranmore village is located where the N6 from Galway to Dublin and the N18/N20 from Galway to Limerick and Cork. The new N6 Dual Carriageway will connect to the existing road at Briarhill, and with the N18 at Glenascaul. This will mean the current N6 leading into Oranmore will have to be reclassified. The new N18 Dual Carriageway is in the planning stage and as proposed would connect the new N6 at Rathmorrissey at a three level interchange. This road would run close to Oranmore but will not connect directly to it, instead motorists would have to drive south on the existing N18 to Kiltiernan or they will be able to join the road by driving along the new N6 and changing in Rathmorrissey. * The proposed light rail system for Galway (Gluas) was set to include Oranmore from the opening of the line if approved but now the Gluas will be built in the city and then extended out to Oranmore in time. The Gluas is still only in the early planning stage.
