He died at his chalet on July 29, 1983 of motor neurone disease (Lou Gehrig's Disease) at age 73. Billy Kearns, the American actor, also lived much of his life in Château-d'Œx. He died on November 28, 1992 of lung cancer at age 69. A museum dedicated to Montgolfier type ballons is located is the center of the town.
