Description
Coordinates: 52°07′19″N 0°23′20″W / 52.122°N 0.389°W / 52.122; -0.389 Cople is a village and civil parish in the English county of Bedfordshire. Cople derived from the phrase Cock Pool which was a place where chickens were kept and was mentioned in the Domesday Book. The centre of Cople is dominated by the All Saints Church which was originally built soon after 1087 by the De Beauchamp family and later became part of Chicksands Priory. The list of Vicars maintained by the church dates back to 1237. All Saints Church was rebuilt in the 15th century, although parts of it date from a little earlier, by the families who owned the local manors. In the first part of the 16th century the church were extended. Cople was the home of the Spencer family, a branch of the Northamptonshire Spencers (with whom they shared a coat-of-arms).[2] The Spencer family had acquired the manor of Rowlands near Cople in 1531 and held it for several centuries.[3] The sons of Nicolas Spencer Sr. and the former Mary Gostwick[4], Nicholas Spencer and his brother Robert both emigrated to America, to Virginia and Maryland respectively.[5] Nicholas Spencer worked as a London merchant for a time, then emigrated to Virginia in the 1650's to serve as an agent for his cousin, John Colepeper, 1st Baron Colepeper[6], who owned an immense grant in the state.[7] Nicholas Spencer subsequently served in the House of Burgesses, as Secretary and then President of the Virginia Colony. He was elevated to Acting Governor of the Virginia Colony on the departure of his cousin Thomas Lord Culpepper in 1683. Spencer also patented the land at Mount Vernon with his friend Lt. Col. John Washington, ancestor of George Washington.[8][9] "The Spencers’ Cople estates," according to the Bedfordshire County Council, "were bought by Francis Brace for the Dowager Duchess of Marlborough, and the manor still was known as Rowlands when part of the Duke of Bedford’s estate at the start of the 19th century."[10] Despite the departure of some family members to America, Spencer family members continued to reside in Cople and its environs for many years afterward.[11] At the junction with the A603, (Bedford to Sandy) is the Toll House. This house dates from around 1770 and was used to collect tolls from the road users. This is one of only two toll houses that still exists in Bedfordshire. Cople House, a large manor house, was at southern end of the village and was destroyed in a fire in 1971. In 1976 twenty four large homes were built on the site and renamed Woodlands Close. The original coach house survived the fire and has been restored and converted into three houses.
