History
The name in 1086 was recorded as Riseberge although in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle it was Hrisanbyrge: both early and late Anglo Saxon names meaning Hill where brushwood grows. The manor of Risborough was a royal manor held by the King at the time of the Domesday survey in 1086. The Risborough estate has always been royal hunting land, from the time that it was mentioned as such in the Saxon Chronicles in 903 until the time of King Henry VIII.[citation needed] In the early 14th century, the royal manor of Risborough came into the hands of Edward, the Black Prince. The Black Prince had a palace in the town, on the site now occupied by the car park next to the church. The palace of Princes Risborough was part of the extensive estates owned by Catherine, wife of King Henry V[citation needed] and passed, with the Crown, to the monarch. Later, the estate was sold in 1637 by King Charles I to a London citizen. The palace changed hands privately several times, it has long since disappeared. In 1765 the Earl of Buckingham gave the rectory of Princes Risborough to the manor at Nutley Abbey in Long Crendon, to which it is still attached today. The market in the town was granted by King Henry III, so was the privilege of the townsmen to be excused from attending quarterly assizes. The Parish Church of St Mary's dates from the 13th Century with many alterations made over subsequent centuries, including interior works in the 1860s and a new spire in the 1900s.
Modern times
The ecclesiastical parish of Princes Risborough today has approximately the same extent as the former manor and includes various hamlets scattered over the nearby Chiltern Hills. These include Cadsden, Lacey Green, Loosley Row, Longwick and Speen, among others. The town is overlooked by Whiteleaf Cross. Today Princes Risborough is an interesting town that has been featured many times in films and television series (e.g. Jonathan Creek, Inspector Morse, Midsomer Murders and Double First) as being a typical English country town. It is very popular with commuters as it has excellent rail links to London, Birmingham and Aylesbury. Notable residents include Jay Kay from Jamiroquai and Lee McQueen, winner of The Apprentice series 4. Since the reintroduction of the Red Kite to the Chiltern Hills, Princes Risborough has become an ideal location to view this bird of prey as they are often sighted above the town and surrounding areas. The town is home to Princes Risborough School, which is a co-educational secondary school.
Railway links
At one time Princes Risborough station was a notable railway junction, having the main line from High Wycombe entering the station and no fewer than three lines exiting it - the branch lines to Aylesbury (still open), Watlington (closed, but used by the preserved Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway as far as Chinnor), and Oxford (now closed). The main line carried both Great Western and Great Central trains (at least from 1906). The Great Central is now closed and at one stage this formerly important junction was reduced to one platform - until Chiltern Railways took it upon themselves to re-build a second one.
