There were 2,565 housing units at an average density of 856.0/sq mi (330.1/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 94.54% White, 0.35% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 2.14% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 0.46% from other races, and 2.24% from two or more races. 2.22% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 2,506 households out of which 34.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.3% were married couples living together, 7.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.9% were non-families. 21.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.94. In the CDP the population was spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 3.4% from 18 to 24, 22.0% from 25 to 44, 32.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 93.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.9 males. The median income for a household in the CDP was $117,457, and the median income for a family was $154,673. Males had a median income of $88,000 versus $59,286 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $79,459. About 2.8% of families and 3.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.7% of those under age 18 and 1.9% of those age 65 or over.

Kentfield (formerly, Tamalpais, Ross Landing, and Kent)[2] is a census-designated place (CDP) in Marin County, California, United States, just north of San Francisco. Kentfield is located on the Northwestern Pacific Railroad 2 miles (3.2 km) southwest of downtown San Rafael,[2] at an elevation of 115 feet (35 m).[1] The population was 6,351 at the 2000 census. The ZIP code is 94904, and is shared with the neighboring community of Greenbrae.

Geography

Kentfield is located at 37°57′08″N 122°33′26″W / 37.95222°N 122.55722°W / 37.95222; -122.55722.[1] According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 3.0 square miles (7.8 km²), of which, 3.0 square miles (7.8 km²) of it is land and 0.33% is water.

History

The place was founded by James Ross as Ross Landing.[2] Steamers would come up the Corte Madera Creek to the landing there.[2] Albert Emmet Kent bought the land from the Ross estate in 1871.[2] Ken built an estate called Tamalpais, later applied to the settlement by the railroad.[2] The named was changed to Kent in the 1890s, and finally to Kentfield with the opening of the first post office in 1905.[2]

Marin Catholic High School

Marin Catholic High School, a Roman Catholic college preparatory, serves young boys and girls in the Catholic tradition. The student population currently numbers around 725. The school is owned by the Archdiocese of San Francisco.
