Angora Fire

On Sunday, June 24th 2007, a wildfire broke out at the Seneca Pond recreation area.[5] Known as the Angora Fire, the situation was the worst of its kind in Lake Tahoe history.[6] The fire spread through out the region destroying homes and forests. As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 23,609 people, 9,410 households, and 5,391 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,347.5 people per square mile (906.1/km²). There were 14,005 housing units at an average density of 1,392.5/sq mi (537.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 75.73% White, 0.75% Black or African American, 0.97% Native American, 6.01% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 12.48% from other races, and 3.90% from two or more races. 26.66% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 9,410 households out of which 30.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.3% were married couples living together, 12.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.7% were non-families. 29.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.15. In the city the population was spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 11.4% from 18 to 24, 33.0% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 107.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 107.4 males. The median income for a household in the city was $34,707, and the median income for a family was $40,572. Males had a median income of $26,352 versus $22,280 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,452. About 9.1% of families and 12.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.7% of those under age 18 and 7.0% of those age 65 or over. The population was 23,609 at the 2000 census. The east end of the city, on the California-Nevada state line, is mainly geared towards tourism, with T-shirt shops, restaurants, hotels, and Heavenly Mountain Resort with the Nevada casinos just across the state line in Stateline, Nevada. The city extends about five miles west-southwest along U.S. Route 50, also known as Lake Tahoe Blvd. The western end of town is mainly residential, and clusters around "The Y" (new intersection October 2008), the X-shaped intersection of US 50, State Route 89, and the continuation of Lake Tahoe Boulevard after it loses its federal highway designation. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.5 square miles (42.7 km²), of which, 10.1 square miles (26.1 km²) of it is land and 6.4 square miles (16.7 km²) of it (39.03%) is water. Elevation is 6260 ft. South Lake Tahoe is part of the Sacramento–Arden-Arcade–Roseville Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The city incorporated in 1965 by combing the previously unincorporated communities of Al Tahoe, Bijou, Bijou Park, Stateline, Tahoe Valley, and Tallac Village.[4] A post office was established in 1967.[4]

Politics

In the state legislature South Lake Tahoe is located in the 1st Senate District, represented by Republican Dave Cox, and in the 4th Assembly District, represented by Republican Ted Gaines. Federally, South Lake Tahoe is located in California's 4th congressional district, which has a Cook PVI of R +11[3] and is represented by Republican Tom McClintock.
