There were 219 housing units at an average density of 912.4/sq mi (352.3/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 45.56% White, 3.02% Black or African American, 6.81% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 38.37% from other races, and 5.86% from two or more races. 56.33% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 183 households out of which 38.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.5% were married couples living together, 19.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.0% were non-families. 32.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.89 and the average family size was 3.72. In the CDP the population was spread out with 35.0% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 21.2% from 25 to 44, 18.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 98.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.5 males. The median income for a household in the CDP was $11,563, and the median income for a family was $16,417. Males had a median income of $26,458 versus $20,750 for females. Winterhaven (formerly, Karmack)[1] is a census-designated place (CDP) in Imperial County, California, United States. Winterhaven is located 6.5 miles (10 km) east of Pilot Knob,[1] The population was 529 at the 2000 census. It is part of the 'El Centro, California Metropolitan Statistical Area'. North of Interstate 8 and bordering Yuma, Arizona, the town is partly Quechan Indian reservation. The Colorado River is the town's eastern border.

Geography

Winterhaven is located at 32°44′22″N 114°38′05″W / 32.73944°N 114.63472°W / 32.73944; -114.63472.[2] According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.6 km²), all of it land. Winterhaven is the Southeasternmost CDP in California.

Politics

In the state legislature Winterhaven is located in the 40th Senate District, represented by Democrat Denise Moreno Ducheny, and in the 80th Assembly District, represented by Republican Bonnie Garcia. Federally, Winterhaven is located in California's 51st congressional district, which has a Cook PVI of D +7[4] and is represented by Democrat Bob Filner.
