The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.03. In the town the population was spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 28.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 101.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.2 males. Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 55.0 square miles (142.4 km²), of which, 54.3 square miles (140.7 km²) of it is land and 0.7 square miles (1.7 km²) of it (1.20%) is water.

As of 2006, North Stonington's own Keith Sidle (an ambitious 17-year-old) had his own segment on the MTV show, MADE. Keith's goal was to go from buff bodybuilder and rockclimber to a ballroom dancer.
