There were 2,348 housing units at an average density of 582.4/sq mi (225.0/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.01% White, 0.64% African American, 0.73% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.15% from other races, and 1.00% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.91% of the population. There were 1,644 households out of which 16.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.7% were married couples living together, 7.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.4% were non-families. 30.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.08 and the average family size was 2.52. In the CDP the population was spread out with 15.4% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 20.1% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 33.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 53 years. For every 100 females there were 94.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.0 males. The median income for a household in the CDP was $25,930, and the median income for a family was $31,897. Males had a median income of $26,483 versus $17,985 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $18,149. About 8.1% of families and 12.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.6% of those under age 18 and 8.8% of those age 65 or over.

Lake Panasoffkee is a census-designated place (CDP) in Sumter County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,413 at the 2000 census.

Famous Events

The body of an unidentified white female homicide victim was found 2/19/1971 under the Lake Panasoffkee Bridge on I-75, in Sumter County, Florida. The victim’s age was estimated to be 18 – 23 years old. The cause of death was determined to be strangulation. Detectives have named the victim Little Miss Lake Panasoffkee until they can positively identity her. On April 14, 1985, Evan Merritt, caught a 41 pound Long Nose Gar in Lake Panasoffkee, Florida, this is the largest long nose gar caught in the state of Florida.

Geography

Lake Panasoffkee is located at 28°47′26″N 82°7′48″W / 28.79056°N 82.13°W / 28.79056; -82.13 (28.790426, -82.129900)[3]. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.1 square miles (10.5 km²), of which, 4.0 square miles (10.4 km²) of it is land and 0.25% is water.
