There were 188 housing units at an average density of 43.4/sq mi (16.8/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 96.18% White, 2.63% African American, 0.48% Asian, 0.48% Pacific Islander, and 0.24% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.48% of the population. There were 180 households out of which 30.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.0% were married couples living together, 6.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.6% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.88. In the village the population was spread out with 21.7% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 29.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 126.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 114.4 males. The median income for a household in the village was $41,607, and the median income for a family was $51,250. Males had a median income of $32,222 versus $22,031 for females. The per capita income for the village was $20,937. Makanda is a village in Jackson County, Illinois, United States. The population was 419 at the 2000 census.
Geography
Makanda is located at 37°37′5″N 89°13′46″W / 37.61806°N 89.22944°W / 37.61806; -89.22944 (37.618190, -89.229545).[1] According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.3 square miles (11.2 km²), all of it land.
Special events
Makanda is home of the annual spring Makanda Fest, and the fall Vulture Fest, both of which include live music, arts and crafts shows, and food. The most recent Makanda Fest was held on Saturday May 10th and Sunday May 11th, 2008. The next Vulture Fest is scheduled for Saturday October 20 and Sunday October 21, and features vultures that take roost in the Makanda canyon during the fall. The fairs draw crowds from near and far, and each year renew the magic of tiny Makanda's huge role in the region. Two total solar eclipses will be visible from Makanda on August 21, 2017 and April 8, 2024. The paths of greatest totality cross each other in a peninsula jutting into Cedar Lake, roughly at coordinates +37.64322, -89.2656. Makanda is also the home to "the Makanda Ballas Association" (otherwise known as the "MBA") a local basketball league.[1]. The league began approximately four years ago. The MBA court has been titled "Joey Kelly Court" in rememberance of Joey Kelly.[2]. The official MBA season lasts from approximately April to October, while an unofficial pre-season of "winter ball" happens intermittenly in the months of November through March.[3] The MBA hosts an annual 100 point game near the end of each official season, whereby two opposing teams play for an indefinite period of time until one team reaches 100 points (with all completed field goals meriting one point respectively) [4].
