The racial makeup of the city was 97.51% White, 0.33% African American, 0.50% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.44% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.02% of the population. There were 1,563 households out of which 26.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.4% were married couples living together, 14.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.8% were non-families. 37.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.09 and the average family size was 2.72. In the city the population was spread out with 20.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 20.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 83.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.8 males. The median income for a household in the city was $20,810, and the median income for a family was $27,852. Males had a median income of $30,809 versus $22,439 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,013. About 26.3% of families and 27.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 44.2% of those under the age of 18 and 10.3% of those 65 and older.

Prestonsburg is a city in and the county seat of Floyd County, Kentucky, United States.[1] It lies in the eastern part of the state, along the banks of the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River. It was founded in 1797 by Col. John Preston—for whom it was named—along with Solomon Stratton, Matthias Harman and Andrew Hood. The population was 3,612 at the 2000 census.

Prestonsburg is located at 37°40'4" North, 82°45'32" West (37.667872, -82.758765)[2] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.1 square miles (28.7 km²), of which, 10.9 square miles (28.2 km²) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.5 km²) of it is water. The total area is 1.81% water.
