Phenomenon/Local Legends
Arbyrd has hosted a haunted house and spooklight tour the last few years based on a well known phenomenon in this area. Read more about this at the local newspaper, The Daily Dunklin Democrat - [1]. Local legend has it that there is a ghost light or spooklight near Arbyrd. This "Light" is known as the "Arbyrd Light" or as the "Senath Light" depending on which area you are from. It is actually situated between 3 towns(Arbyrd, Senath and Hornersville) on an old gravel road near the community known as Hollywood. It is close to the Lulu church and cemetery. Once you get to the right spot on this old gravel road you are suppose to flash your lights 3 times and wait. Some say the light appears far away and then just in a second or two is right up on your car. Others say it approaches slower and bobs from side to side. It has been reported that it causes peoples cars to stall. There are several stories floating around as to what this could be. Some think it is just swamp gas since this area use to be one big swamp. Some locals think it is gaseous fumes from an old junk ditch that used to be there. Others say it is a train conductor who lost his head when he fell from the train. He is holding a lantern while searching for his head. Still others say it is the lantern carried by a female ghost who is searching for her husband who was found hung in Hang Man's tree. Another story is that 3 young ladies had left a candle burning in a window so one of their boyfriends would know they were awake. The curtains caught on fire and burnt them all up in the house. This version says the light is the young lady carrying the candle still looking for her boyfriend to come meet her. I am not posting this as factual information stating that "The Light" does exist. I am posting this stating that the "Legend of the Light" does exist. The last reference to this phenomenon was deleted because someone said it was not verifiable. This legend is very much verifiable as shown in the newspaper referenced above and by the numerous websites that is dedicated to the legend of the ghostlight/spooklight. It has been referenced on Obiwans Paranormal website[2], Missourighosts.net[3], Senath Class of 58 website(you will have to look this one up), the Kait 8 news website[4] and there are many others. Arkansas State University had students to do an Analysis of the Legend of the "Arbyrd Light".[5]
