There were 1,554 households out of which 35.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.4% were married couples living together, 14.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.6% were non-families. 27.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.06. In the city the population was spread out with 27.1% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who were 65 years of age or older. Bonne Terre is a city in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 4,039 at the 2000 census. The community was originally settled by the French in 1720 after lead ore was discovered. It was called La Bonne Terre, "the good earth." Since 2005, Missouri has conducted all of its executions at the Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center in Bonne Terre.

Bonne Terre is located at 37°55′18″N 90°33′6″W / 37.92167°N 90.55167°W / 37.92167; -90.55167 (37.921635, -90.551763)[3]. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.1 square miles (10.6 km²), of which, 4.0 square miles (10.5 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (1.70%) is water.
