There were 797 households out of which 33.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.5% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 23.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.02. Parishville is a town in St. Lawrence County, New York, United States. The population was 2,049 at the 2000 census. The Town of Parishville is in the east-central part of the county and is east of Potsdam.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 101.4 square miles (262.7 km²), of which, 98.2 square miles (254.3 km²) of it is land and 3.2 square miles (8.4 km²) of it (3.20%) is water. The town is partly in the Adirondack Park. The West Branch of the St. Regis River flows northward through the town. The Raquette River flows through the south part of Parishville. New York State Route 72 is an east-west highway in the north part of the town. New York State Route 56 cuts across the southwest corner of the town.

History

The town was laid out in 1809 on a tract of land that David Parish had purchased from J. D. Le Ray de Chaumont in 1808.[1] The first settlers arrived around 1810. The town was formed in 1814 from the Town of Hopkinton. The town was named for David Parish.[1] In 1843, part of Parishville was used to form the Town of Colton. In 2001 the Parishville - Hopkinton Boys Varsity Baseball Team won the New York State Class D Championship to become the first team in school history to do so. The Parishville-Hopkinton boys soccer team has also won back to back section x titles in 2007 and 2008. Parishville is also hometown to Scott Koen, who was one of the first on scene when Flight 1549 crashed into the Hudson River.[citation needed]
