There were 2,735 households out of which 34.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.6% were married couples living together, 21.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 31.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.08. In the city the population was spread out with 29.5% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 85.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.0 males. The median income for a household in the city was $20,496, and the median income for a family was $24,189. Males had a median income of $24,182 versus $16,958 for females. Idabel is a city in McCurtain County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 7,158 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of McCurtain County[2]. The town is located in a cultural area of the state known as Little Dixie and the tourist area Kiamichi Country. The city was first named Pernell, then renamed for the wife of a Missouri Kansas Texas Railroad executive and engineer, John Randolph Dillon who, as a result of his work, was given the prize of re-naming the town. His wife's maiden name was Idabel Rinehart. A ceremony was held for the renaming of the town.

Geography

Idabel is located at 33°53′47″N 94°49′45″W / 33.89639°N 94.82917°W / 33.89639; -94.82917 (33.896299, -94.829238)[3]. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.9 square miles (41.3 km²), of which, 15.9 square miles (41.3 km²) of it is land and 0.06% is water.
