Geography

Nowata is located at 36°41′43″N 95°38′15″W / 36.69528°N 95.6375°W / 36.69528; -95.6375 (36.695409, -95.637546)[4]. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.1 square miles (8.0 km²), all of it land.

History

Nowata served as a train-stop of Native Americans from the East being resettled by the government. The Delaware tribesmen who passed through named it "nuwita," meaning "friendly" or "welcome." In Cherokee, the town is called ᎠᎹᏗᎧᏂᎬᎬ (A-ma-di-ka-ni-gunh-gunh, roughly), which means "Water is all gone," translating what it sounded like the word meant: No Water.[5] Nowata has had many famous visitors and residents,such as Teddy Roosevelt, Will Rogers, Tom Mix and J.Paul Getty. In addition, many outlaws roamed Nowata's streets, including the James Gang, Dalton Gang, Bill Doolin, Henry Starr and Cherokee Bill.
