Thompsontown is a borough in Juniata County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 711 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Thompsontown is located at 40°33′53″N 77°14′05″W / 40.564804°N 77.234807°W / 40.564804; -77.234807.[1] According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2), all of it land. Thompsontown is in the eastern part of the Juniata County and is surrounded by Delaware Township. The main industries of the area include farming and the Triangle Pacific cabinet factory, just west of the town. Many residents commute to Harrisburg, the state capital or to Mifflintown.

History

Thompsontown was founded in 1755 by William Thompson. It is home to the oldest church in Juniata County. Legend has it that during the Civil War after the Battle of Gettysburg, a wandering Confederate deserter was captured in Thompsontown and was hung in the town square.
