There were 828 households out of which 32.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.5% were married couples living together, 18.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.5% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 3.01. In the city the population was spread out with 27.4% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 18.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 79.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 72.2 males. Kirbyville is located at 30°39′33″N 93°53′49″W / 30.65917°N 93.89694°W / 30.65917; -93.89694 (30.659203, -93.896852)[3]. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.4 square miles (6.3 km²), of which, 2.4 square miles (6.3 km²) of it is land and 0.41% is water.
Historical development
The town was first established in 1895 when the Gulf, Beaumont and Kansas City railroad reached the site. It was first named Kirby for John Henry Kirby, a lumber businessman who intended to use the site for building a facility to market his lumber. The post office was established the same year, but the name was changed to Kirbyville when it was discovered that a town called Kirby already existed. [4]
